How to Learn Self-Defense at Home

As people are becoming more conscious about their safety nowadays, self-defense training is gaining in popularity even among young children. Children are no longer safe at school and the number of criminal attacks is increasing by the day. Vulnerable citizens are prone to these dangers unless you know how to protect yourself.

When it comes to self-defense training, the best way to learn is from someone who is already a professional in this field. You may be able to find a school in your area that offers self-defense trainings. But while a live instructor is irreplaceable, you may also, for personal reasons, train on your own using martial arts books, Internet videos and other resources.

Training at home offers more convenience because you could schedule your training at your most convenient time without leaving your home. There is also a wide range of free materials that you could use. Most of them can be found online.

Here are some tips that can help you learn self-defense at home:

  1. Ensure that your overall health is suitable for the trainings. If you have a special health condition like a heart problem or high blood pressure, consult your doctor first before starting any formal training. Also, patients with hip flexor pain or those undergoing anterior hip precautions may have to postpone their trainings for a later time because there are certain moves that may not be suitable for them.
  2. Create a workable schedule for your daily practice. Allot at least one day a week and at least one hour per session to practice. Maintain discipline during trainings by strictly following your schedule just like when you attend formal class.
  3. Prepare your training materials for each session. You may download videos in advance or read materials about certain moves that you like to practice for a particular session.
  4. Designate a special place in your home where you can practice. Invest also in special equipment such as a punching bag which is helpful during training.
  5. Begin each training session with warm up and stretching exercises. They are helpful to avoid muscle pain especially in the hip flexor after your training, aside from overstretching your muscles during actual training.
  6. While a punching bag can help you during practice, it is still best if you could ask someone to be your sparring partner from time to time so that you can test your progress. It should be someone who is also knowledgeable about self-defense and not just anybody with no experience. During sparring sessions, be sure to use safety equipment and appropriate gears such as feet protection and gloves. Also practice caution whenever you engage in sparring. Be always ready to protect yourself from kicks and punches.
  7. Establish your routine, and as much as possible, stick to your schedule during training.

Learning self-defense offers a number of benefits. Aside from protection against possible attacks, it is also a good form of exercise. You could train for self-defense and be able to maintain your overall physical wellness while learning how to protect yourself.

Different Ways to Prevent Fatty Liver Disease

A fatty liver disease is one of the most common diseases that cause liver pain. It is classified into alcoholic and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Those who are diagnosed with non-alcoholic fatty liver are normally advised to have a change of eating habit and be involved in various physical activities including regular exercises, sports, martial arts or self-defense.

Many people who train for self-defense may have experienced painful liver in the past before they got involved in self-defense training. Because of the physical activities they undergo, many are able to fully prevent experiencing painful liver again. But although it is a popular disease, not many people fully understand what a fatty liver disease is.

A fatty liver disease is a condition where there is fat buildup in the liver cells. This may be caused by drinking too much alcohol or by reasons that are unrelated to alcohol such as being overweight or obese. If not treated promptly and properly, a fatty liver disease can advance into a more serious disease such as liver cancer or cirrhosis of the liver. An alcoholic fatty liver can be prevented by avoiding or totally stopping the consumption of alcohol, while a non-alcoholic fatty liver can be prevented in several other ways.

Most of the patients who are diagnosed with a non-alcoholic fatty liver disease are obese or overweight. Fortunately, losing weight can help reverse your condition. According to a study published in the Hepatology Journal, weight loss can help reverse non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases. Additionally, the American Gastroenterological Association recommends losing weight by at least ten percent.

Another effective way to prevent a non-alcoholic fatty liver is to observe a healthy diet. Avoid eating foods that are high in cholesterol and saturated fats such as dairy products, processed meats, processed pastries, chips and fried foods among others. Instead, opt for fresh fruits and vegetables. Doing so will also help you achieve and maintain a healthy weight ideal for your age and height.

Lastly, to avoid a fatty liver, get physically active as much as possible. Exercise regularly, get involved in sports, or train for martial arts or self-defense. They are activities that can let you burn fats, lose weight and have a health liver. For a start, you can try at least three hours of physical activity per week. Then make it more frequent as your body gets used to it.

A fatty liver disease is a condition that can be prevented or treated but it can also lead to a more serious deadly disease if neglected. First, you must see your doctor for the right diagnosis. If it is proven that you have an alcoholic fatty liver disease, quit drinking. If you have a non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, you could lose weight, observe a healthy diet, or do physical activities. Don’t let this condition affect and enslave you. Knowing how to prevent or treat this disease can help your liver be back to normal health.

Taking care of skin tears

Skin tears can occur in any person, but people with delicate skin, the elderly and neonates are more prone to getting them than others. This is also because elderly people and neonates are often dependent on other people for their care and sometimes even something as little as a long fingernail can cause a skin tear. Depending on the intensity and the depth of the skin tear, it can be a serious problem, especially if not handled properly and with care. A skin tear basically occurs when trauma causes the upper layer of the skin to separate from the lower layer. If treated with care and precaution, a skin tear can heal pretty soon.

When a person gets a skin tear, the first thing to do is to stop the bleeding. This can be achieved by putting pressure on the wound. Once the bleeding stops, the next step is cleaning the wound properly and disinfecting it. The best way to do this using warm saline water. When cleaning the wound, it is important to do it gently. Rubbing the skin will only make the tear worse and the wound will become aggravated.
After the wound is clean, it should be covered with a bandage. Using an ointment is a good idea, but this should not been done without the consultation of a doctor. Once the wound is bandaged, the dressing has to be changed every second day. With skin tears, the chance of the wound getting infected is very real. When changing the dressing, it is important to check for signs of infection and to call the doctor immediately if anything is in an untoward condition.
Skin tears usually do not require sutures or staples, as the cuts are not that deep and sutures can do more damage than helping. If the skin needs to be patched up before dressing the wound, it is better to use surgical glue which is easily available and simple to use. However, if the tear is too deep and has been caused by blunt force trauma or an attack, rather than the skin being too sensitive, proper medical attention is needed and sutures might be required to close the wound properly.

Most skin tears can be avoided if the care providers are vigilant when handling the elderly or the neonates. Trimming nails, staying clear of sharp objects and gently handling the persons can make a lot of difference. Dry skin also contributes to skin tears so moisturizing the skin regularly can help keep it soft and safe from tears. Cortisone creams, used for an extended period of time, can also cause the skin to become more sensitive and thus susceptible to skin tears. Some diseases such as renal failure and heart problems can also put an individual at a higher risk of skin tears as the medication for these conditions and its overall effects have a negative impact on the skin’s elasticity.

Skin tears can occur anywhere on the body and there is no specific area which is more prone to get these. However, an area where there is already a skin tear becomes more liable to new skin tears.

Different Ways to Learn Self Defense

In the past, self-defense training used to be popular only among men. But now, there are many children and women even those pregnant ones who train for basic self-defense. Over the years, many people find it necessary to learn how to defend themselves in case they are being attacked by bad elements. Criminals now are more aggressive in attacking their victims such that they even attack in public places and in broad daylight. Some are even attacked inside their own homes. And anybody can fall victim. But the most vulnerable are young children and pregnant women.

There are several ways how you can learn self-defense. One way is by enrolling in a martial arts class where the instructor can teach you the basic moves to more complex ones. When you train in a formal school, there is a curriculum being followed depending on the type of self-defense you are learning. Normally, it also includes sparring sessions so that you can test the skills you have learned. Another advantage is that you could also make use of the facilities in the school such as the punching bags and other equipment.

Other people who like special training also employ a personal trainer, although this option can be more expensive. In the long run, it is also more beneficial because your trainer will be more focused on teaching you rather than teaching several students at one time. This approach is more applicable if you really like to master a particular skill or if you like to join tournaments.

If you have a limited time and budget but still would like to know the basic moves to defend yourself against an attack, there are helpful videos online that can help you train on your own. Many of them can be found in YouTube. Just simply search for self-defense moves and you will find numerous videos under this category. Aside from videos, there are also reading materials that teach about techniques and moves in self-defense.

Lastly, you could also learn self-defense by observing some animals known for their self-defense mechanisms. One of them is hedgehogs. Hedgehogs are exotic pets that are naturally shy and cautious because they are prey to bigger animals in the wild. When hedgehogs are raised as pets, they are normally kept in hedgehog cages by their owners. Inside their cages, they normally hide in their hideaways to escape from the peeking eyes of people. But when you let them out of their cages and they feel threatened, they normally roll into a ball with their spines becoming more pointed. This is how they defend themselves. Just like hedgehogs, you should also be cautious at all times. Be always ready with your defense so that anytime you feel endangered, you can protect yourself or the people with you.

Learning self-defense is beneficial for your safety. You have different options on how to learn it. You should be able to learn the basic moves so that you will be ready to protect yourself in case you are put in a situation when you have to do so.

Common Reasons for Tooth Pain

One of the top reasons why people visit their dentist is to get tooth pain relief. Tooth pain can be really painful and can affect anybody from children to elderly. While most people blame tooth decay for tooth pain, there are other factors that may cause it:

Tooth decay

Although it is the most common cause, it is not the only reason why a person may suffer from toothache. When the decay penetrates the inner layer of the tooth and deeper into the pulp, it could cause sharp and intense pain. Sometimes, if the decayed tooth is already infected, it can also result to tooth abscess. And when this happens, you may feel a pulsating and throbbing pain which makes it difficult to identify the tooth causing the pain.

Gum Disease

Advanced gum disease does not just cause gum pain but also tooth pain. When there is infection and inflammation of the gum, it leads to swelling and dull pain in the teeth.

Broken Teeth

For those who are into physical sports and activities like self-defense training, having broken teeth is unavoidable during practice or sparring sessions. Your partner may accidentally punch or kick you on the face which could result to broken or fractured teeth. Even if the fracture is not very deep, it could still cause tooth pain.

Cracked Tooth Syndrome

Sometimes, even if there is no obvious fracture or crack in your teeth and you don’t have any tooth decay or gum problems, you may still experience tooth pain. This may be caused by cracked tooth syndrome where the defect on the teeth is concealed. This condition normally happens when a person has the habit of chewing gums or grinding his teeth. It may also affect those who have experienced a past tooth injury or those who have large fillings in their teeth. Cracked tooth syndrome can cause severe pain especially when chewing.

Improper Oral Hygiene

Your teeth may detach from the gums due to gum disease or improper oral hygiene. As a result, the roots of the teeth become exposed, causing sensitive teeth to become painful every time they touch hot, cold or sour foods or drinks.

Impacted Wisdom Tooth

An impacted or misaligned wisdom tooth which failed to erupt in the gum line can be extremely painful. As the tooth tries to erupt, it can put pressure on an adjacent tooth, causing a dull pain. Additionally, if a wisdom tooth has just partially erupted, it is prone to bacterial buildup leading to infection that may cause redness and swelling in the gum area and severe pain in the tooth.

Braces

Braces can also cause painful teeth for a brief period of time. The pain is usually more severe when the braces were just tightened or adjusted.

These factors are some of the common causes of tooth pain. Different types of tooth pain require different types of treatment. If you are experiencing painful teeth, the best solution is to see your dentist for proper treatment.
