Self Defense Against Dog Attacks

Have you even been attacked by a dog and felt like you were helpless? Dog attacks can happen almost instantly. You could be attacked by a seemingly friendly dog or a dog on a leash. You could be attacked during your regular run or when visiting a friend’s house. You could be attacked by trained dogs of criminals as their weapon. Dog attacks can happen anytime and anywhere. And if you don’t know what to do when attacked by a dog, your life might be put at risk.

If a dog is attacking you, it can be extremely difficult to stop it no matter how small it may be. Do not underestimate a dog’s size or weight. Even poodle mixes like a yorkie poodle may pose a threat to your life when they attack you. Also, be particularly careful when you are around certain breeds of dogs such as pitbulls as they are known to be ferocious attackers.

If there is a dog nearby and you are afraid that it might attack you, do not run away from it. The sight of a running target could trigger most dogs to attack. And they are fast runners and can easily overtake you. Instead, stay calm and be vigilant of your surroundings. Check around where you could safely go and protect yourself. And if you have a chance, get hold of any object that you can use against it.

An attacking dog is normally fast-moving and it can be hard to distract them from attacking you or anybody. If you fear that there is an imminent attack, your first line of defense if you don’t know how to fight back is to protect your neck and face by covering them with your arms and hands. Doing so can help save your face and your life. Just pray that a good Samaritan would come and help you.

If you must intervene, make use of an object you are already holding or have easy access to. It could be a key, a ball pen, an umbrella, a stick, or anything that you could use to stab into the eye of a killer animal if necessary. If you don’t have any object at hand, you should launch a kick aimed at the underbelly or head which are the most vulnerable areas of a dog. The base of the skull and the center of the spine and the groin are prone targets especially if you are not the ones being attacked but are helping someone under attack. To minimize risk or injury, keep yourself as far from the jaws as possible.

When you are being attacked by a dog, your presence of mind is important to properly react to the situation. You could call for help while defending yourself from an attack. You could also fight back with whatever object you can use. The important thing is to stay as far away from the jaws and to be always ready to protect your face and neck.

5 Signs of Implantation to Watch Out For

Signs of implantation could be an initial sign of pregnancy. Technically, it happens after around nine days from the date of ovulation, which is the time when a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. Women can have different symptoms of implantation. Some women may not even notice these signs. That is why some women who like to detect implantation or early signs of pregnancy use an implantation calculator to be sure.

Knowing the signs of implantation is especially useful among women who are into self-defense training. Training involves some difficult moves as well as punching and kicking during sparring sessions which could endanger the life of the unborn child. If a woman is not careful enough, getting hit by punches or kicks in the stomach area or getting involved in accidents during training may terminate early pregnancy. Once implantation is detected, women who train for self-defense should exercise precautions during training.

Antihistamines to Fight Allergies

Many people who train for self-defense experience having to skip training or workouts because of allergies. It could take days or even weeks before they can get back to normal training. And allergies are something that can affect anyone.

Allergy refers to hypersensitive reaction of the body to certain harmless substances. It could also mean an unusual reaction of the body in relation to the increase in the immunoglobulin level. Allergic reactions normally occur when the immune system reacts to allergens. Allergens can enter the body through the digestive system, respiratory system or skin contact. There are three common types of allergens, namely the inhalant allergens (such as pet dander, house mites, pollen, spores), ingestant allergens (eggs, peanut, milk, certain medications), and contactant allergens (such as metals and cosmetic products).

Generally, there is no cure for allergies. However, their symptoms can be controlled using certain medications including antihistamines. But antihistamines cannot give relief to all kinds of allergies. Antihistamines can relieve the symptoms of hay fever, allergic rhinitis, atopic eczema, urticarial, allergic conjunctivitis, and allergic reactions due to insect bites and stings. Patients with mild allergic reaction to ingestant allergens may also find relief by taking antihistamines. In some instances, doctors may also recommend antihistamines for patients with fluid in lungs caused by allergic reactions.

How Antihistamines Work

When the body is exposed to allergens, it will trigger the body to release chemicals called antihistamines. Histamines are what causes the skin to itch or the nose to swell when exposed to allergens. To block histamines and stop the symptoms of allergic reaction, you need to take in an antihistamine.

There are different types of antihistamines available which can be categorized into commercial antihistamine and natural antihistamine. Commercial antihistamines are available in capsules, tablets, liquid, eye drops and nasal sprays. Some can be bought over the counter while others are prescription only. Popular brands of prescription antihistamines are Astelin, Astepro Atarax, Vistaril, Clarinex, Cyproheptadine, Emadine eyedrops, Palgic (carbinoxamine) and Xyzal. OTC antihistamines, on the other hand, include Allegra, Benadryl, Dimetane, Claritin, Chlor-Trimeton and Zyrtec (certirizine).

One of the disadvantages of commercial antihistamines is that some people might suffer from their side effects, the most common of which are drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, blurry vision, nausea and vomiting. That is why they resort to using natural antihistamines from plant sources.

There are some herbs that you could easily source from your pantry or backyard garden, which possess strong antihistamine properties. One good example is thyme which can aid in allergic reactions to the skin such as itchiness and skin rashes. Other herbs with antihistamine properties are basil, fennel, chamomile, ginger, parsley, saffron and nettles.

The saying that prevention is better than cure best applies to patients who have a history of allergic reactions to certain allergens. For instance, if you are training for self-defense outdoors and you are allergic to dust, be sure to find a location that is not dusty. If symptoms persist despite taking antihistamines, it is best to see your doctor immediately.

Is It Okay to Have a 1,000-Calorie Diet While Training for Self-Defense?

runningPeople who engage in self-defense training are considered to be active. Hence, they have a need for more daily calorie intake. However, it is surprising to know that some of those training for self-defense are on a 1,000 calorie diet. Is it okay to have a 1,000-calorie diet while training for self-defense?

The daily calorie requirement for each person per day greatly varies depending on age, gender and physical activities. For those 19 to 30 years old and engaged in moderate physical activities, the average calorie requirement is between 2,200 and 2,800 calories. If a person is more active, the calorie requirement is increased to an average of 2,400 for females and 3,000 for males. This data is based on the Estimated Energy Requirements (EER).

People on a 1,000-calorie diet combine having a special diet plan with physical activities to lose weight in a shorter span of time. The 1,000-calorie diet focuses primarily on taking in greater amounts of low carb fruits and vegetables because they are high in water and fiber which makes a person feel fuller. The standard nutritional guideline for this diet is composes of between 20 to 35 percent fat calories, at least five servings of vegetables and fruits and less than 300 mg cholesterol.

Calories are considered to be energy-giving foods. If your diet is limited to 1,000 calories, your body may not feel normal. You may suffer from fatigue and become weak and less energetic. That is why it is not recommended to engage in physically demanding activities such as self-defense training if you are on this special diet. Instead, you could do light exercises such as walking. Don’t push yourself to the limit by excessive training and exercise while on a low calorie diet because it can have a detrimental effect on your overall health. If you feel unwell and are starting to develop negative symptoms, you should seek medical assistance immediately.

If you like to lose weight, it is either you choose self-defense training or a low calorie diet. It is not advisable to choose both at the same time because it may take a toll on your health. However, you could have a low calorie diet for a week and rest from training and then resume your normal diet and training in the next week.

When done right, a low-calorie diet may be effective in helping you lose a significant amount of excess weight quickly. And while on this diet plan, it is important to ensure that your body still gets the right amount of nutrition it needs.

So, the general answer is no. While there are many success stories about people losing weight in a 1,000-calorie plan, it does not work for everyone. Some may experience muscle loss rather than fat loss or may even suffer from malnutrition, fatigue and other complications instead of losing weight. It is important that before you embark on any special diet plan, you should first consult a medical expert who can give you more advice on this matter.

Physical Workouts You Can Do With Your Dog

Dogs are great pets because they are very versatile animals. Different breeds of dogs are designed for various purposes. While some breeds like husky Pomeranian mix are more suitable as lap dogs, there are also breeds that are great as exercise or workout companions. In fact, you will be amazed at the wide range of physical activities that you can do with these animals. And these activities offer good health for both you and your pet.

Here are some of the popular options for activities you can do with dogs:

  • Walking – Walking is not a very strenuous activity, making it suitable for most if not all breeds of dogs including lap dogs. Walking can be a good exercise for you and your dog. You could take your pet for a walk before going to work daily or anytime during the week when you are free. Before taking your dog for a walk, remember to always observe safety precautions like putting your dog on a leash so that you can have better control of it. Your dog should also wear a collar tag for identification. And don’t forget to bring water and poop bag for picking up its messes.
  • Running – Some breeds are not only suitable for walking but also for running. Among these breeds are terriers, Goldendoodles and Weimaraners, which are good for long and steady runs. With proper training, they can be great runners, running 10 miles or more. Breeds like Greyhound, Beagles, Pitbull, Labrador and Golden Retriever are also excellent runners but they can only take shorter distances.

When running with your dog, its breed is not the only consideration. You should also consider its age because younger dogs should not be taken for long runs because their bones may not yet be fully developed, putting them more at risk of bone problems if you force them to run.

  • Swimming – If you have a dog that loves water, swimming with it can be a great activity. One of the breeds known to be great swimmers is the Irish Water Spaniel. Though any breed will do because dogs are natural swimmers. In additions, dogs with joint problems can benefit a lot from swimming. But if your dog is not comfortable with being in water, don’t force it.
  • Agility training – Obstacle courses are also a fun activity to do with dogs. This activity may involve running, crawling and jumping which could help develop their mental and physical development. As for you, it is also a good training especially if you are involved in sports or even self-defense training. Obstacle courses can help you to stay focused and be more flexible, which are necessary in self-defense training.
  • Other activities – Slow bike riding, rollerskating or rollerblading, and cross-country skiing are other activities you could do with your dog. Recently, a new kind of activity is increasingly becoming popular among dog owners. It is doga, which is a combination of dogs and yoga. Basically, doga involves doing yoga poses with your dog.

Before taking your pet for a certain kind of activity, it is best to consult your veterinarian first for advice. This is necessary because there are breeds that may not be suitable for some types of activity. Some activities would also not be suitable or advisable if your dog has certain health conditions.

The Benefits of Teaching Children About Self-Defense

Learning self-defense is not only for adults. In fact, many parents encourage their children to learn basic moves at a young age. There are many schools which offer formal training in self-defense. Some offer weekend classes while others offer after-school classes.

Self-defense training offers more than just developing the skill that your child could use in case they are put into a situation where they have to defend themselves. There are many other benefits your child could enjoy during training.

The foremost benefit of self-defense training is that it helps improve the overall health and wellness of your child. Physical activities during training encourage movement of the entire body which in turns helps avoid obesity which is common among young children. It also helps improve their stamina to endure other strenuous physical activities they may encounter at home or at school. Also, these activities can help develop flexibility and coordination of the body and mind.

Self-confidence and self-control are also among the benefits of self-defense training. In training school, your child will be taught not to use their skill to aggressively start a fight but to use it to defend themselves. And that will teach your child about self-control which is an important part of a positive character. If your child lacks confidence because of constant bullying in school, their confidence can also improve with self-defense training knowing that they can now defend themselves against bullies.

Many parents also see great improvement on their child’s behavior and personality after several sessions of self-defense training. As your child trains, he will know the importance of concentration and focus to avoid getting punched or kicked. With improved concentration and focus, your child could use these new improvements to perform better in school because they can now concentrate more in listening to their teacher.

Other known benefits of learning self-defense among children are improved self-esteem, improved attitude toward other people especially the weaker ones, and improved attitude against challenges. Also, children who are skilled in self-defense become natural leaders in their school as they gain the trust and confidence of their fellow students. As a result, they also become more mature and able to know about responsibility at an early age.

With the widespread bullying in many schools, self-defense training is gaining in popularity nowadays. And while the purpose of many parents is for their children to develop confidence in facing their bullies, training offers their children many other benefits.

There are different ways on how you could introduce self-defense to young children. One way is through self-defense coloring pages. So instead of buying Disney’s Frozen coloring pages or Skylanders coloring pages which are quite popular nowadays, why not buy coloring pages that teach basic self-defense moves? They may not be very common but you can find them in many bookstores. These coloring pages could teach even toddlers some basic moves to defend themselves against attackers so that when they enroll in formal training, they will already be familiar with some of those moves.
